“The Global Partnership for Sustainable Transport (GPST), Urban Mobility and the Post-2015 Development Agenda”

Transport is a key driver of economic prosperity and sustainable development. The sector accounts for a significant percentage of the gross domestic product of countries, and innovative and vibrant transport value chains are essential to global economic integration and economic development. The transport sector also generates millions of jobs and moves goods and services across urban centers, through regional corridors and across the globe. The work conducted by the UN Habitat, the IRU, SLoCaT and other organisations on sustainable transport has demonstrated its critical link with development. Further, the work of the UN Secretary General’s High Level Advisory Group on Sustainable Transport (HGLAST), which will oversee the preparation of the first Global Transport Outlook Report in 2016 also confirms the importance of sustainable transport to the Post 2015 Development Agenda. Recognising the above, the IRU developed The Global Partnership for Sustainable Transport (GPST), a global, business and industry-led, multi-modal, strategic and actionoriented multi-stakeholder platform created to promote the sustainable development of all modes of transport in the interests of global inclusive socio-economic development. The GPST will work to formulate actionable recommendations and concrete measures to support the three pillars of the SDGs to help promote economic development, contribute to reducing negative impacts on the environment and to promote social inclusiveness. This high level thematic event, which will convene during the historic 70th UN Summit to adopt the Post-2015 Development Agenda, will bring together diverse transport stakeholders including leaders from all modes of transport, industry associations, Governments, and the United Nations, to focus on sustainable transport and in particular, the role that urban mobility plays in promoting the Post 2015 Development Agenda.
