Linking Public Transportation to a New Urban Agenda

17 September 2014 @ 8:30 am

Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport (SloCaT), International Association for Public Transportation (UITP), Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), World Resources Institute/ EMBARQ, and Ford Foundation are holding a side event at the HABITAT III PrepCom on September 17, 2014. The event will show how to optimize the contribution of mobility policies to the success delivery of Habitat III’s New Urban Agenda. This event will show how a global shift in investment and policy towards public transport, walking, and cycling could save over 20% in public and private transport costs between now and 2050. This could free up $100 trillion for more sustainable development and cut urban passenger transport CO2 emissions by over 20%. The event will also provide evidence of the contribution of public transport to growth and jobs, and to the attractiveness and competitiveness of cities.

Mobility profoundly shapes urbanization and livability. This event will open a dialogue between negotiators and the sustainable transport community on how public transport can be part of and support Habitat III’s New Urban Agenda. It will link quantitative global mobility visioning at a national/regional level to progress on related Sustainable Development Goal recommendations and current best practice.

This side event will be organized in close coordination with UNHabitat’s Urban Basic Services Branch.

Further information of the side event will be posted soon.
