Outreach Meeting for Sustainable Transport in India

10 March 2015 @ 10:30 am

Organized By:

The Outreach Meeting for Sustainable Transport in India was jointly organized by The Resources and Energy Institute (TERI) and the Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT) on Tuesday March 10th, 2015. The meeting was hosted by TERI at the Conference Room of its New Delhi Office. The Outreach meeting brought together India-based members of the SLoCaT Partnership, both Indian organizations, as well as local India office of the international organizations, and also the representatives of relevant government offices.

2015 is a key year for global policy making on sustainable development and climate change. In September world leaders will meet in New York to adopt Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which like their predecessors – the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)- will guide development policy in the next 15 years. In December the global community will come together in Paris, France to discuss and hopefully agree on a new global agreement to address climate change.

Both the sustainable development and climate change discussions and subsequent agreements have a direct relevance for the transport sector. Considerable progress has been made both globally and in India to make land based transport more sustainable and it is important that such experiences are reflected in global discussions on sustainable development and climate change in which transport departments often have not had an active role. Of special relevance are also the initiatives on transport announced at the Secretary General’s Climate Summit in New York in September 2014 (http://www.slocat.net/climatesummit).

The purpose of the Outreach Meeting was to discuss the interaction between national and local action on sustainable transport in India andglobal processes on sustainable development and climate change. The meeting had two main objectives:
