UNGA High-level Thematic Debate: Implementing Commitments on Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Financing

11 April 2016 @ 12:00 am

The President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Mogens Lykketoft, will convene a high-level thematic debate on sustainable development, climate change and financing. This event is one of three high-level events the President will convene during UNGA 70. Lykketoft said on 19 October 2015 that the meeting will involve a range of stakeholders. Per remarks on 15 December 2015, the event will allow for Member States to present the steps they are taking to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and to look at inter-connections between Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) on climate change, the broader Paris Agreement and overall implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and to share thinking on how to effectively integrate climate action into sustainable development strategies. On this topic, the UN Secretary-General is expected to address how the UN system is moving ahead to support national actions, and there will be a broader discussion on capacity building for achieving the 2030 Agenda. In addition, the event will address how to catalyze means of implementation for the SDGs, including ICTs and financing for “sustainable, resilient and climate smart infrastructure.” Finally, discussions will consider how to foster accountable and transparent multi-stakeholder partnerships to support the 2030 Agenda.
