Side-Event: The High Ambition Coalition for Shipping Emissions Reduction

27 April 2017 @ 6:00 pm

The High Ambition Coalition for Shipping Emissions Reduction is a side event held during the Pacific Regional Energy and Transport Ministers’ Meeting, organised by PIDF-FIJI-RMI. Theme for this event is Pacific Leadership Post Paris.

The Majuro Declaration on Climate Leadership confirmed the responsibility of all to act urgently to reduce and phase down greenhouse gas pollution in order to avert a climate crisis for present and future generations. The Suva Declaration on Climate Change emphasized that the global nature of climate change requires all countries to cooperate. The IMO approved at its MEPC70 meeting in 2016 the Roadmap for developing a comprehensive IMO strategy on the reduction of GHG emissions from ships. It contains a work plan that will result in the adoption of an initial IMO Strategy at MEPC 72 (2018) and the adoption of a revised IMO Strategy at MEPC 80 (2023).

How does the IMO Roadmap contribute to the global solution on climate change, why is this issue of importance to the Pacific, how do Pacific states ensure they are able to fully participate and how do we ensure the unique issues this raises for the Pacific are recognised and addressed?

Please see agenda here.
