Event: Seventh Meeting of the Open Working Group on SDGs (OWG 7)

The seventh session of the UN General Assembly’s (UNGA) Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will take place from 6-10 January 2014, in New York, US. OWG 7 is expected to discuss: Sustainable cities and human settlements, sustainable transport (2 days); Sustainable consumption and production (including chemicals and waste) (1.5 days); and Climate change and disaster risk reduction (1.5 days).

ICRAF, IFAD Consider Biofuel Development

The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) reported on an event held to demonstrate the potential contribution of biofuels to sustainable development. In particular ICRAF emphasized that if greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets are to be met, approximately 26% of transport will need to be powered by biofuels by 2050.

Seminar Discusses Future ECPA Work Plan on Energy Efficiency

A regional seminar held for South American countries by the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) discussed possible elements for a future Work Plan for the energy efficiency pillar of ECPA, including actions targeting transport, buildings, industry and mining, and possibly using nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs) to promote and finance energy efficiency measures.

IFAD Workshop on Aviation Biofuels Calls for Engaging Small Farmers

The workshop examined approaches to ensure that smallholders are not marginalized by increasing biofuel production for aviation. IFAD highlighted a $12 million initiative on research and development of alternative crops for smallholder biofuel production. They also underscored recent research grants that will help to produce biofuels sustainably.

CEM Newsletter Highlights Success of Clean Energy Solutions Center

The newsletter also highlights next year’s fourth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM4), the Super-efficient Equipment and Appliance Deployment (SEAD) initiative’s Global Efficiency Medals competition, the September Women in Clean Energy Symposium, and past stakeholder meetings by several of CEM’s initiatives and projects.

Event: Transforming Transportation 2013

The World Bank and the World Resources Institute’s (WRI) sustainable transport center, EMBARQ, will co-host the 10th annual “Transforming Transportation” event on sustainable transport. The 2013 agenda will discuss, inter alia: capitalizing on the multilateral development banks’ $175 billion commitment for sustainable transport made during Rio+20; opportunities for sustainable transport in China, India and Latin America; integrating urban transport and development; improving transport health and safety in cities; and bringing shared bicycle solutions to scale in developing countries.

ICAO Council Forms High-Level Group on Market-Based Measures, EU ETS "Stops the Clock" on Aviation

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council agreed to form a High-level Group regarding the feasibility of a global market-based measure for international aviation and to develop a policy Framework to guide its application. In response, the EU will “stop the clock” on enforcement of the inclusion of aviation in the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) on flights to and from Europe until autumn 2013.
