Launch of the Global Report on Human Settlements 2013: Planning and Design for Sustainable Urban Mobility

October 8, 2013, 2:45pm-3:45pm
Singapore, Singapore

Organized By

  • United Nations Human Settlement Program (UN-HABITAT)

The UN Habitat 2013 Global Report on Human Settlements (GRHS) focuses on sustainable urban mobility. Planning and Design for Sustainable Urban Mobility puts forward a case for a conceptual leap on the issue of urban mobility. The purpose of ‘transportation’ and ‘mobility’ is to gain access to destinations, activities, services and goods. Thus, access is the ultimate objective of transportation. As a result, urban planning and design should focus on how to bring people and places together, by creating cities that focus on accessibility, rather than simply increasing the length of urban transport infrastructure or increasing the movement of people or goods.

The launch of the 2013 GRHS at the LTA – UITP Singapore International Transport Conference and Exhibition (SITCE) follows the formal launch of the report on October 7, World Habitat Day, in Medellin, Colombia and London, U.K. Through the  launch events on the 2013 GRHS  UN Habitat seeks to strengthen partnerships with existing partners on sustainable urban mobility and develop new partnerships.

The program for this session at the LTA-UITP Transport Conference will feature a round-table discussion on the GRHS and seek to explore the new paradigm of sustainable urban mobility and its relevance for Public Transport, the International Financial Institutions and the United Nations.

After an introductory presentation on the GRHS 2013 by Mr. Debashish Bhattacharjee, Lead Urban Mobility, UN-Habitat, a distinguished panel of the following  speakers will discuss the issues raised in the publication for sustainable urban mobility.
