Roundtable on Inclusive, Sustainable and Resilient Transport

In 2015, the global policy agenda for sustainable development received a major boost through the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes 17 SDG2 and a commitment to support the Paris Agreement on climate change. The Habitat III process, which is expected to result in the adoption of the New Urban Agenda in Quito in October 2016, offers a unique opportunity to integrate the two processes on sustainable development and climate change from an urban perspective.
Sustainable, low carbon, pro-poor transport will be an essential element of the implementation of any of these three major global agendas.
Governments, cities, development organizations, and civil society are increasingly mobilizing in support of enhanced action on sustainable, low carbon transport as essential to achieving the world’s climate and human development goals: Many countries are including transport in their implementation plans for the global policy agreements on sustainable development and climate change. The world’s multilateral development banks made an unprecedented $175 billion commitment toward sustainable transport. And the German government is launching a major new initiative to support sustainable urban mobility in developing countries. The Partnership on Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT) works to strengthen coordination and cooperation among transport stakeholders and these types of global initiatives. We believe that it is only through coordinated action that we will achieve our global goals for sustainability and development.
