ACT – A global coalition is decarbonising the transport sector

On the occasion of the United Nations Secretary-General Climate Action Summit, for the first time, over 100 organisations come together in a bold commitment to decarbonise transport. Action towards Climate-friendly Transport (ACT) is the largest global coalition aiming to catalyse transport as an enabler of sustainable development in line with the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement. The coalition delivers on its goals by connecting innovative approaches with integrated long-term planning, accelerating the deployment of electric vehicles, creating a mass market for zero-emission freight vehicles and fostering global dialogue arenas with the private sector.

ACT shows how climate protection, quality of life and just growth are intrinsically linked in the transport sector. “Transport is the make or break of global climate action. ACT delivers transport action on the ground and will create a better future for millions of people.” says Carlos Alvarado Quesada, President of Costa Rica.

The challenge is daunting: Catering to the fast-growing demand for mobility while slashing GHG emissions, strengthening climate resilience and promoting sustainable development. Without sustainable transport the achievement of the 2030 Agenda will be impossible. Transport is the fastest growing emissions sector and is responsible for 28% of energy-related GHG emissions. With business as usual scenarios, emissions will double by 2050.

We can win this race – ACT is delivering results through four crucial components:

  • Component 1 is led by the Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI) and the Sustainable Mobility for All Partnership (SUM4All) and aims to connect innovative approaches at a global scale with integrated long-term planning and policy-making processes at the city level in developing and emerging countries.
  • Component 2 is led by GIZ and WRI to support, in policy dialogue with governments and mayors, an enabling environment for mass rollout of electric busses.
  • Component 3 is led by the Transport Decarbonisation Alliance (TDA), EV100 and CALSTART/Drive to Zero and will support the creation of a mass market for zero-emission freight vehicles by increasing their global demand through commitments made by governments, cities and private companies.
  • Component 4 is led by MOVIN’ON’s and UITP’s membership by establishing global dialogue arenas with the private sector to connect key mobility stakeholders and to structure collaborative dialogue and help accelerate measurable action.

After the Summit, the momentum created through ACT will foster innovations by connecting multiple stakeholders from the private sector, governments, cities, NGOs and academia. The implementation of all components will be supported through UN-Habitat. The ACT coalition of subnational governments, corporations and organisations will work together to build capacity, facilitate integrated city and transport planning processes, drive public procurement processes and provide exchange platforms with the private sector and financiers. With ACT, the transport sector is substantially bolstering its role in climate action locally and globally.
