Sustainable Transport Discussed at World Bank's Workshop on Market Readiness

The World Bank’s Partnership for Market Readiness (PMR) held a Workshop on Effective Instruments for GHG Mitigation in Urban Transport on March 14, 2013. The workshop was mostly aimed at participants from countries involved in PMR which were interested in developing carbon market instruments in the transport sector.

The workshop had presentations from various countries, regions or states that had either implemented or evaluated the implementation of market instruments aimed at the transport sector (e.g. Switzerland, state of California), the reasons for including  it in one way or another (i.e. through emissions-trading schemes, carbon taxes or a combination of both). Some of the PMR countries that have started to develop their market mechanisms (or evaluate their country’s readiness to develop a market mechanism) gave an overview of how this can be achieved in future (i.e. Colombia and Mexico).

The workshop also had a presentation of the World Bank’s upcoming document on Transport and Low Carbon Development (“Turnihg the Right Corner”) and other institutions’ and experts’ views on the subject (IMF, Grutter, Oko Institute).
