Climate Action Summit and the ACT Initiative

SLOCAT played a critical role in securing a space for the sustainable, low carbon transport community at the UN Climate Action Summit. In the lead up to the Summit on 23 September 2019, SLOCAT worked hand in hand with partners both within and outside the sector to bring together a wide range of transport initiatives, and helped launch Action towards Climate-friendly Transport (ACT). With over 100 organisation, ACT is the largest global coalition of countries, cities and sub-national governments, United Nations entities, leading companies, civil society organisations and other stakeholders, aiming to catalyse transport as an enabler of sustainable development in line with the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement. ACT has been conceptualised and curated over the past months by these actors to draw clear pathways in the complementary fields of policy framework setting, integrated transport and urban planning, non-motorised and public transport infrastructure provision, and zero emission fleet replacement. The four components of ACT consist of the following:

act-1

1

Connecting innovative approaches with integrated, long-term planning and policy-making processes

act-2

2

Enabling architecture for a mass rollout of electric buses

act-3

3

Creating a mass-market for zero-emission freight vehicles

act-4

4

Setting-up global dialogue arenas with the private sector

SLOCAT partners played a key role in the development of ACT, as well as in its elaboration at the Summit and its weekend events, including Alstom, FIA Foundation, GIZ, ICLEI, ITDP, Michelin, Sustainable Transport Africa, WBCSD, WRI, UIC, UITP, and others.
