At UN Habitat Assemblies and Conferences

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. UN-Habitat is the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. UN-Habitat works with partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities and communities. UN-Habitat promotes urbanization as a positive transformative force for people and communities, reducing inequality, discrimination and poverty.

  • SLOCAT Intervention at the Second Global Stakeholder Forum I 3 – 4 June I organised by UN-Habitat
  • Think Tank Session– Pathways to COP28: Synergies between COP27 Presidency initiatives on Sustainable Urban Resilience for the next Generation SURGe and on Low Carbon Transport for Urban Sustainability LOTUS I 7 June I International Association of Public Transport (UITP), International Union of Railways (UIC), SLOCAT and Walk21 Foundation and UN-Habitat
  • Side event 32 – Is the World Ready to Prioritise People Over Cars? How Public Transport, Walking and Cycling Can Rescue the Sustainable Development Goals and Paris Agreement I 8 June I UITP, UIC, SLOCAT, Walk21 Foundation and UN-Habitat. Side event featured on Kenyan news special on walking and cycling.
Two transport-relevant resolutions adopted: 
  • On climate change – Formal recognition of the COP27 Presidency SURGe initiative, which includes an urban mobility component. It further broadens Member State support for the initiative and provides UN-Habitat a mandate to continue its work on SURGe.
  • On urban infrastructure – References to transport, highlighting the importance of urban development and planning alongside public transport and active mobility.

10th World Urban Forum I 8-13 February 2020 I Abu Dhabi

  • Showcasing sustainable, low carbon transport as a key driver to implement the New Urban Agenda, SLOCAT worked with a number of partners to bolster the transport and mobility aspects of WUF10.
  • Facilitation of a Partners Task Force for WUF10 engagement, including UN-Habitat, German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), UITP, UIC and Walk21.
  • Networking event, ‘Leaving no one behind: A Cross-Constituency Approach to Sustainable Urban Mobility’.
  • Intervention at Dialogue 6 on Partnerships and initiatives Supporting Culture and Innovation in Cities and at the Neal Peirce Memorial.
