77th Session of the UNECE Inland Transport Committee

The 77th Session of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Inland Transport Committee will take place on 24-26 February 2015 in Geneva, Switzerland. 

The agenda of the 77th ITC session includes topics that require decisions by the Member States and also topics for consideration and stock-taking. Among these topics are the UNECE implementation of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety, the development of efficient, safe and secure PanEuropean (TEM/TER) and Euro-Asian (EATL) transport networks, sustainable road, rail, inland water and intermodal transport and logistics including climate change adaptation, transport and competitiveness, CO2 reduction in inland transport, harmonization of vehicle regulations, border-crossing facilitation, the implementation of the TIR Convention, transport of dangerous goods, assistance to countries in transition, etc. In addition, the future priorities for the transport work of UNECE will be at the heart of the discussion. 

Furthermore, every year the annual session starts with a high-level policy segment, which this year will be on “Rethinking sustainable urban transport and mobility to meet the challenges of a new era”. It will take place in the morning of 24 February 2015 from 10.00 to 13.00. The policy segment consists of two panels focussing on specific examples of current urban transport and mobility challenges in cities of the ECE region. Both panels will be followed by a discussion. The speakers will be from governments, municipalities, universities and the private sector – more information is available here. Due to its timing, this year’s policy segment will contribute to the global debate, helping to build consensus on the important role of the transport sector in the post-2015 sustainable development framework. 

Finally, a government-only segment will deliberate on 24 February on the participation of non-ECE contracting parties in subsidiary bodies of the ITC.
