Transport Thematic Day at COP 23

The Transport Thematic Day will be held on Saturday 11th November 2017 in Bonn, Germany. The event is organized by the Marrakech Partnership on Global Climate Action (MP-GCA) transport content group consisting of ITF, PPMC, UIC and UITP.
The plenary discussion will build upon the transport related discussions in COP 21 and COP 22. It will review progress made by the stakeholders of the Paris Process on Mobility and Climate (PPMC) in the development of the Global Macro Roadmap, presented first at COP 22 as one possible model to guide national, country specific, strategies for a synergistic, long-term transformation of the sector.
Six in-depth parallel sessions have been organized for each topic. Each topic will have its own statement on what the sector has achieved, what the transport sector can do for climate change, how the transport sector can contribute to the NDCs and LTERS, scale up ambitions, support existing commitments and ensuring the quality of sustainable transport services, infrastructures and systems.

The Opening Session will set the context for Transport Thematic Day and will focus on the need to scale up action and ambition on transport and climate change. This session will highlight the critical roles both state and non-state actors play across regions.

Since 2015 the GCA Transport Initiatives have been scaling up action on all modes of transport and bringing together thousands of State and Non-State actors to tackle climate change and increasing ambition. As well as reporting on the progress of the 15 existing Transport Initiatives, this event will also introduce 6 new Transport Initiatives.

Sustainable Freight for a Low Carbon Transport System (Room 6)
International trade will continue to increase for the next few decades, carbon emissions from global freight transport, especially road freight, will become progressively high. The event will cover road and rail freight and address the topics of modal shift and the importance of intermodality.

The reduction of carbon emissions in urban transport requires a mix of policies and measures that will target changes in both technologies and mobility patterns. Recent trends across the world have shown that travel behaviour could be shifted to depend less on personal mobility through innovations in technology, urban planning, public transport services, and sustainable transport systems.

Accelerating the Adoption of Clean Vehicles (Room 8)
We will need to use all the available options if we are to transition from fossil to sustainable fuels and eventually total decarbonisation. The session will explore how the initiatives that are helping to scale the uptake of low emissions vehicles. The session will also explore what national governments are doing to support the uptake in both the public and private sector and the opportunities ahead. It will also look into the importance of other sectors and what is holding us back from creating smart and clean transportation solutions for tomorrow.
