Stakeholders Agree to Continue and Broaden the Paris Process on Mobility and Climate

On March 10th, the Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT) and the Michelin Challenge Bibendum (MCB) organized a stakeholder meeting for the Paris Process on Mobility and Climate (PPMC). The meeting took place in Paris, France and brought together more than 50 participants representing all modes of transport, as well as different actors in the sector including transport operators, development agencies, civil society, private sectors and government institutions. Following the success of the PPMC in promoting sustainable transport in the context of COP21, the stakeholders agreed to continue and expand the PPMC process in 2016 and possibly beyond.
The expanded concept of PPMC will be defined by two themes; convergence and ambition. Following the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Paris Agreement on Climate Change, the transport sector now needs to draw a common framework that will converge the sustainable development and climate change aspects and the expanded PPMC will reflect the convergence of the two aspects. In the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, the governments call for climate action that aim to maintain the increase of global warming to 1.5 degrees, a goal which is more ambitious than previously planned for. The sustainable transport community needs to work to understand what it would mean for transport sector to have a 1.5 degrees scenario. Similarly, if the world is going to achieve the mission of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and make sure no one is left behind; there is much to be done by the sustainable transport community to create universal access to sustainable, low carbon and resilient transport.
Guided by the convergence and ambition themes, in 2016 the PPMC will have three main components; a Common Framework for Transport, Sustainable Development and Climate Change that provides an integrated narrative for national and local level decision makers in the period of 2016-2030; a Macro Road Map for decarbonizing the transport sector from 2016-2050, and 10 Quick-win Actions to kick start the transformation of the transport sector from now to 2020. These components will be developed further in the coming months by the sustainable transport community.
In 2016, the PPMC organizers will also expand the reach of the flagship Transport Day event by organizing three Transport Day events in three continents; Asia, Latin America and Africa. The first Transport Day will be organized in Surabaya, Indonesia in July during the Preparatory Committee III for the Habitat III. This event will be followed by the Transport Day in Quito in October as a side event to the Habitat III Conference. The tradition of organizing a Transport Day during COP will continue with the Transport Day in Marrakesh on November 13th which will take place during the COP 22.
