London Roundtable on Enhancing Private Sector Financing for Sustainable Transport

Introduction:

The London Roundtable on Enhancing Private Sector Financing for Sustainable Transport will be held on March 25^th, 2015. The event is organized by the Partnership for Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT) and hosted by the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) at the EBRD Headquarters in London, United Kingdom. 

The London Roundtable will be the kick-off event for SLoCaT Partnership’s planned 2015 series of roundtable dialogues on private sector financing for sustainable transport. Through an iterative process with key stakeholders, these dialogues will help to underpin SLoCaT’s advocacy efforts on the finance dimension of a transport sector specific Means of Implementation for the currently discussed post-2015 UN Development Agenda, and will help contribute to the implementation of a new, more ambitious global climate change agreement under the UNFCCC by the end of 2015. The discussion will also help to shape EBRD’s future engagement with the private sector in financing of the growing sustainable transport portfolio of EBRD.

Objectives:

The London Roundtable intends to advance the dialogue on private sector financing in sustainable transport beyond the current status quo to meet climate change targets and sustainable development goals by: 

• Establishing an overview of the current state of private sector involvement in sustainable transport investment, and potential for increased future involvement especially from institutional and other non-traditional private sector organizations providing funding for sustainable transport
• Defining parameters to optimize interaction among the public and private sectors, reduce risk, and expand use of innovative financing instruments for sustainable transport
• Analyzing the role of global processes on climate change and sustainable development in accelerating private sector involvement in sustainable transport
• Analyzing the implications for MDBs and bilateral development organizations of a greater involvement of institutional investors in sustainable transport
