Surabaya Transport Day @ Habitat III PrepCom3

26 July 2016 @ 1:30 pm

Habitat III – driving forward global action on sustainable urban mobility

The Surabaya Transport Day on 26th July will bring together the transport and development community to discuss how to ensure the Habitat III process catalyzes meaningful, coordinated global action on sustainable urban mobility in the years ahead.

Transport Days 2016

Surabaya Transport Day is the first of 3 Transport Days in 2016 which focus on supporting the implementation of sustainable, low carbon transport in the context of the UN Habitat III and UNFCCC processes. The other Transport days will be held during Habitat III Conference (Quito) and UNFCCC COP 22 (Marrakesh). The outcome of the Surabaya Transport Day will be used as inputs for the Quito and Marrakesh Transport Days.

Tentative Program (13.30 – 19.00 pm)

Opening and introduction Will the New Urban Agenda drive the necessary global action on urban mobility?

How is urban mobility included in the Habitat III draft text? What more is needed? What would be the ideal global policy framework to support global action on urban mobility? What should national governments agree to do together or at the national level?

Including:

  • Outlook for global urban mobility in 2050
  • Current status of urban mobility in the Habitat 3 negotiations
  • City and national perspective

Short Announcements of new activities / projects / initiatives

Towards a Quito Action Plan on Sustainable Urban Mobility

While there is widespread agreement that the Habitat III New Urban Agenda should be action orientated and is a chance to support delivery on the 2015 agreements on the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, it will be difficult to secure unanimous agreement of 190 member states on specific actions. However, the transport and development community non-state actors could together agree and commit to a specific action agenda. This session is a chance to reflect on the value of such and initiative, what it could contain and how it could bring coherence to existing and planned actions on sustainable urban mobility.

  • Introduction and context
  • Generating ideas for a Quito Action Plan on Sustainable Urban Mobility (Breakout sessions)
  • Structure and contents of a Quito Action Plan on Sustainable Urban Mobility
  • Linkage to other urban mobility initiatives, e.g. German Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative
