Habitat III was the third United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development which took place in Quito, Ecuador, in 17-20 October 2016. Habitat III was the first United Nations global urban summit after the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change in 2015.

The English version of the adopted New Urban Agenda is available here, other language versions are available.

The adoption of a New Urban Agenda which includes numerous and important references to urban transport issues represents and significant step forward for sustainable, low carbon transport and a success for the SLoCaT community that worked effectively together throughout the Habitat III process to promote the role of transport in sustainable urban development.

On the first day of Habitat III the transport community launched a “A Call for Action for national governments to implement the necessary national action to deliver the transformation of urban mobility set out in the New Urban Agenda“.

The focus of Habitat III now switches to the Quito Implementation Plan where partners are making specific commitments to deliver on the New Urban Agenda including the “Transforming Urban Mobility Initiative” launched by the Germany government in Quito.

On the last day of Habitat III SLoCaT signed an agreement with UN-Habitat to support the implementation and tracking of the transport aspects of the NUA in the years ahead.
