The transport sector must approach absolute zero emissions by 2050 in order to aid the Paris Agreement goal of limiting planetary heating to 1.5°C. At the same time, the transport decarbonisation could only be sustainable if the transition is compatible with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement, making significant impacts within SDGs 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned that aligning economies on a 1.5°C pathway will require deep and rapid emissions reductions in energy, land, urban and infrastructure (including transport and buildings) and industrial systems. These structural and systemic transformations can be effectively galvanised through national strategies.
These strategies are set in countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and reveal current levels of ambition, however, they do not paint a complete picture of the global trends and developments which are both leading to and helping mitigate the transport sector’s impact on the climate.
This event will address a nuanced and complementary perspective on climate ambition, based around systemic transformations and their enablers, taking stock of progress within countries and sectors since the Paris agreement.
