Developed collaboratively by SLOCAT and the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), this infographic aims to embed just transition principles into the updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), urging countries to explicitly incorporate social safeguards and workers’ rights as integral elements of climate action in the transport sector.
Key messages:
- A just transition to equitable, healthy, green and resilient transport and mobility systems is central to socioeconomic prosperity for the people and the planet.
- However, less than 20% of NDCs mention a just transition in the transport sector.
- Even when specific provisions for transport are included, the needs and roles of workers in rail, road, urban transport, aviation, and maritime are generally ignored.
- Transport decarbonisation must explicitly prioritise workers’ welfare, ensuring job security, decent working conditions, and active worker participation in decision-making processes.
- Countries must proactively include comprehensive just transition frameworks in their transport-related NDC commitments, referencing the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) endorsed guidelines.
- There is a critical need to strengthen the currently weak linkage between transport adaptation strategies and protections for transport workers against climate-related impacts.
- Successful national models (e.g., Antigua and Barbuda, Colombia, South Africa) demonstrate actionable strategies and effective worker participation that should inform and inspire future NDC updates globally.
