Summary for Decision Makers from the first regional assessment of short-lived climate pollutants in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region. Through this assessment, policy makers and implementers will be able to better quantify and understand the relevant emissions in the region; identify which measures are most important for delivering near-term climate and air pollution benefits; and estimate the reductions in regional air pollutants that could be achieved by implementing these measures, with associated health and crop-yield benefits for the LAC region.
Vehicle ban for 30% of roads in Paris on the 27th of September plummets both air and noise pollution.
On September 27th, 2015, Paris has launched its first Car-Free Day to ban vehicles from 30% of its roads in the city. The minor reduction in traffic has successfully to cut air and noise pollution significantly.
The Mayor of Paris has announced the campaign, “Une Journée Sans Voiture” – “A Day Without Car,” to stop traffic in the city on September 27th as an action to tackle pollution and climate change.
The campaign serves as a significant example to respond to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s call to “reshape the world’s transport systems for a cleaner, safer and more sustainable future.”
Delegates at the World Health Assembly adopted a resolution to address the health impacts of air pollution – the world’s largest single environmental health risk. Every year 4.3 million deaths occur from exposure to indoor air pollution and 3.7 million deaths are attributable to outdoor air pollution. “This is a major landmark,” said Dr Maria Neira, WHO Director for Public Health, Environmental and Social Determinants of Health.
