Knowledge for Action
Understanding the Landscape
and Where to Act Now
Evidence-based, open-source data and knowledge underpin effective policymaking and investment. They enable policymakers to identify cost-effective and context-specific sustainable transport solutions, strengthen transparency and accountability, and support alignment between national and sub-national actions and global agendas, including the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
SLOCAT has long made it a priority to equip decision makers and practitioners with data and knowledge at the intersection of transport, social justice, climate, and sustainability. Our blueprint has always been to co-create knowledge, convene multi-disciplinary expertise, and build robust, collaborative evidence and tools.
At the heart of this work is the Transport, Climate and Sustainability Global Status Report – the GSR. Since 2018, more than 300 experts from over 200 organisations have come together to deliver the GSR as a collaborative effort and ensure that it remains robust, policy-relevant, and grounded in real-world needs and experiences.
In 2024, we released the fourth edition. GSR4 provides a comprehensive, up-to-date assessment of global, regional and national transport demand, use and access, alongside climate and sustainability trends, and policy and investment developments. It serves as a critical reference point for understanding where the sector stands – and where action is most urgently needed.
GSR4 is structured around six modules. Designed to be practical, the chapters under each module provide evidence, highlight what is working, point to tools that support implementation, and showcase multi-actor partnerships.
Module 1: Shaping the Just Transition: Challenges and Opportunities towards Sustainable Transport
Module 2: Transport Pathways to Reach Climate and Sustainability Goals
Module 3: Regional Overviews: Trends and Policy Development
Module 4: Climate and Sustainability Responses in Transport Sub-Sectors and Modes
Module 5: Transport and Energy
Module 6: Economics, Finance and Capacity Building for Transformative Change in Transport
Through the GSR, SLOCAT continues to provide an evidence base for action and advocacy towards inclusive, low-carbon, sustainable, and resilient transport systems and services that work for people and the planet.
