SLoCaT Raising Voice for Stronger Implementation of Sustainable Urban Mobility

The Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT) and members are going to participate together at the ninth session of the World Urban Forum (WUF9) and actively highlight the importance and raise voice for stronger implementation of sustainable urban mobility that is in line with the New Urban Agenda and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

WUF9 and the New Urban Agenda

The WUF9 will take place from 7 to 13 February in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It’s the first major conference about the New Urban Agenda after Habitat III in Quito, 2016. There SLoCaT shaped valuable inputs for transport aspects of the New Urban Agenda and a MoU between SLoCaT and UN-Habitat was signed to accelerate the implementation of the New Urban Agenda.

The New Urban Agenda emphasizes the need for sustainable urban development in all cities around the world. Read this article by the Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI) and Sustainable Urban Transport Project (SUTP) for more information on the new urban agenda and sustainable transport.

The slogan of WUF9 is “Cities 2030, Cities for all: Implementing the New Urban Agenda” and SLoCaT as well as members who organize several events, such as Despacio, Doppelmayr, European Investment Bank (EIB), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), MobiliseYourCity, TUMI, UITP, UN-Habitat, WhereIsMyTransport, World Resources Institute, Wuppertal Institute, are going to show how sustainable mobility for all can be realized.

Share the Key Messages on Urban Transport

In preparation, SLoCaT developed and coordinated a set of main statements with disseminates the following key messages on urban transport at the WUF9:

Access for ALL – Sustainable and successful urbanisation will not be achieved without safe, affordable access for all to social, economic and cultural opportunities – urban mobility provides that access.

Climate relevant – Resilient, low carbon urban mobility supports sustainable cities and is essential to deliver on the Paris agreements mitigation and adaptation objectives.

Implementation – Sustainable urban mobility solutions are available and have been tested at scale – they now need to be implemented everywhere. This requires policies and action on urban mobility at the national and local level.

Dissemination – A wide range of tools, materials and experience are available – but now need to be more broadly disseminated.

Capacity Building – Mature and high quality capacity building services are available – but help needed to reach out to all cities and national policy makers across the world.

Join us! – All urban stakeholders at WUF are invited to join the range of urban mobility events and activities at WUF, meet our community and join our initiatives.
