Transport and Climate: Are We on Track for 1.5°C?

Our latest article is now featured in the SDG Knowledge Hub

We’re proud to share that our latest article, “Will National Climate Plans Put Transport on Track for 1.5°C?”, is now published on the SDG Knowledge Hub of the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD).

This piece, written jointly by SLOCAT, UIC, UITP, Walk21 and WRI, comes at a crucial time. With COP30 in Belém, Brazil approaching fast, countries are expected to submit a new round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). These plans will play a key role in determining whether we can get transport – now the fastest-growing source of CO₂ emissions – on a pathway that aligns with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C target.

In the article, we lay out what needs to change. We look at how NDCs can and must go beyond talk, to include ambitious targets for transport backed by funding, policies, and actions – from better walking and cycling infrastructure, to the rapid rollout of zero-emission vehicles and climate-proof roads.

We also highlight promising examples from countries already taking steps in the right direction – and call for others to follow suit.
